We do not gather information directly from our website. We only gather personal information where contact has been initiated by other means, i.e. by phone or email.
Newsletter registration form - data protection statement
We are a Non-Ministerial Department of the Scottish Administration. Our data processing activities have been notified to the UK Information Commissioner, and appear on the Public Register with the registration number Z9409201.
Information gathered on this form is processed for the following purposes:
- maintaining an accurate mailing list of individuals who have subscribed to the OSCR newsletter
- issuing emails to these individuals enclosing the OSCR newsletter.
We will not share this information with any third parties, and we will deal promptly with requests to unsubscribe from this mailing list.

- to regulate charities in Scotland
- to inform investigations into allegations of misconduct, mismanagement or misrepresentation
- to develop a regime of proactive monitoring
- to encourage and facilitate compliance and best practice within charities
- to inform research into the charity sector in Scotland.
The information on our application forms may be shared with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and other regulatory bodies. If applications are successful, selected information will be publicly available on the Register of Scottish Charities.
Access to personal information about yourself
There is no right to see personal information about yourself under Freedom of Information law. If you use the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 to ask to see your personal information your request will almost certainly be refused.
You do, however, have rights under other laws to see information that an organisation holds about you. The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you rights to request and receive your own personal data.
The Scottish Consumer Council (SCC) has produced "What's on My Record?", a practical guide to rights of access to personal information, available online.

How do I make a request to OSCR under the Data Protection Act?
If you want to ask whether we hold any personal information about you, write to our Records Manager at info@oscr.org.uk, putting Subject Access Request in the title . You are required to supply proof of your identity, which may include:
- a photocopy of the identification pages of your current passport
- a photocopy of a current photo driving licence
- an original of a current utilities bill, or credit card or bank statement.
This would be returned to you if required. It would also be helpful if you could tell us which part of OSCR you believe might hold personal data on you to help narrow the search. Please note that there is currently no charge for this service. Personal data about other people is usually exempt from disclosure if its release would break any of the data protection principles or would be likely to cause substantial damage or distress to another person.
