Events policy

The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) is responsible for encouraging and facilitating compliance with the provisions of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 (the Act). OSCR’s Board, Chief Executive and staff regularly receive invitations to give presentations at a wide range of events.

In considering all requests we have to make a decision about the best use of OSCR’s resources.  This section sets out some of the criteria we use in making a decision:

Public events

Our communications strategy sets out our intention to raise the awareness of both charities and the general public about the new legislation and the role of OSCR.

We welcome invitations to speak at events run by umbrella or intermediary organisations, especially where there are large numbers of attendees or many organisations present, as this allows us to communicate our information as efficiently as possible.

Invitations from charities

Please note that while we do not accept speaking invitations from individual charities, we welcome invitations from charity groups and representative bodies.   When considering such invitations we aim to reach as wide an audience as possible. This often means that we will prioritise involvement in events involving a high number of charities. We do, however, try to respond to requests equitably across all sectors and areas of interest.

We actively seek opportunities to participate in events that will explore some new aspect or issue concerning the Act. These occasions give us the opportunity to discuss ideas and views with charity representatives and thus inform our own thinking.

Invitations from commercial organisations

Many commercial organisations such as law firms and accountants provide important services to charities, helping them to comply with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005. In considering requests from these organisations, OSCR will consider priorities to avoid the perception of favouring one commercial organisation over another.

Requesting a speaker

If you would like OSCR staff to speak at an event you are planning, please e-mail us at info@oscr.org.uk or call Mark Simpson, Senior Communications Officer,  on 01382 220446.

To help us consider your request, you must give us at least 8 weeks' notice and outline the following:

  • date, location and venue
  • the specific topic of the event and OSCR's expected subject
  • your anticipated target audience, including the number of charity representatives expected
  • how long the event and OSCR's session is likely to last
  • any publication or presentation material required from OSCR.
